This alarming development has brought attention to the dangers of inhaling crystalline silica dust, which is prevalent in engineered stone. The study highlights a stark increase in cases of silicosis, a disease that scars the lungs and severely impairs breathing, from 31 in 2019 to a staggering 631 as of this year. This surge has been particularly devastating for men, with a median age of 52, and a significant number of cases concentrated in Los Angeles County.
One victim, Enrique Gonzalez, a San Fernando Valley stone worker, has been unable to work for two years due to silicosis, caused by years of exposure to silica dust in granite and stone manufacturing. His family's struggle to cover medical expenses and everyday costs underscores the devastating impact of this disease. The study's co-author, David Michaels, emphasizes the unnecessary nature of quartz countertops, especially when safer alternatives are available.

California's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has responded by instituting emergency standards in 2023, but compliance has been poor, with 94% of recently inspected shops found in violation.
